How to Use Your Web Host

This obviously depends on which host you've chosen, and there are so many different options that there's no way to cover them all. So, we've just taken the host we use (Bluehost) as a example. Bluehost use a control panel known as cPanel, which is also used by many other hosts, so even if you're using a different provider you may find that yours looks very similar. If you're using a host that has a different interface, that's no problem – they're all pretty similar, and if you understand one it should be easy enough to understand others too.

When you log in to your Bluehost account, you'll see the control panel.

There are a lot of things here, many of which won't be relevant unless or until your website becomes more sophisticated. To begin with, the key things to note are:

  • The web design services (professional and cheap versions) offered in the Partner section. If you're not confident designing your own site, or don't have the time to do so, these may be useful.
  • The Preferences section, which allows you to update your account details.
  • The Email Accounts button in the Mail section, which allows you to create and access email accounts associated with your domain (email addresses of the form emailaddress@yourdomain.com).
  • The Backups and File Manager buttons in the Files section. The File Manager provides a quick and easy interface for uploading files to your site. Backups does exactly what the name implies - allows you to create backups of your site, just in case anything goes wrong.
