Yahoo Mail

Yahoo Mail is a free email service provided by Yahoo. It allows you to "access email from anywhere, enjoy unlimited storage space, and feel secure with award-winning spam protection".

How to Get a Yahoo Mail Address

Go to http://www.yahoo.com (if you're outside of the USA, you should automatically be directed to the appropriate Yahoo site for your region) and hit the "Free mail: Sign Up" button. You'll see a sign-up form which asks a few basic questions (like your name) and allows you to choose your desired email address.

Be aware that if you want a commonly-used address (something like firstname.lastname@yahoo.com), it may well be taken already (you can check using the "Check" button), so you may need to try a few alternatives until you find one that's available.

Yahoo Mail Features

You can see the features that Yahoo Mail provides at: http://overview.mail.yahoo.com. While these features are subject to change, at the current time they include:

  • Unlimited free storage space.
  • Good protection against spam.
  • Ability to chat within Yahoo Mail (an instant messaging function which allows users to exchange typed messages in real-time, without the delays associated with email).
  • The ability to access your email from your mobile phone.

Premium Version – Yahoo Mail Plus

A premium version called Yahoo Mail Plus is available, for a small annual fee (currently $19.99 per year). While the features are subject to change, this currently provides a larger maximum message size (20 MB versus 10MB for the free version), improved protection against spam, plus various other benefits. Details are available at: http://overview.mail.yahoo.com/enhancements/mailplus.

Yahoo Mail POP/IMAP Access

Currently, Yahoo only provide POP3 access to their free email accounts in certain regions (such as Yahoo UK – for email addresses ending in @yahoo.co.uk -, Yahoo India, Yahoo Singapore and Yahoo Hong Kong). In other areas (the USA and elsewhere), they only provide POP3 access if you subscribe to Yahoo Mail Plus.

In regions where Yahoo don't provide POP3 access, you can still do this by using the free application provided by YPOPs (http://ypopsemail.com/about-ypops/1-latest-news/1-welcome-to-ypops).
