Gmail

Gmail is a free email service provided by Google. Its goal is to provide "a new kind of webmail, built on the idea that email can be more intuitive, efficient, and useful. And maybe even fun."

How to Get a Gmail Address

Go to http://www.gmail.com and hit the "Sign up for Gmail" button. You'll see a sign-up form which asks a few basic questions (like your name) and allows you to choose your desired email address.

Be aware that if you want a commonly-used address (something like firstname.lastname@gmail.com), it may well be taken already (you can check using the "check availability!" button), so you may need to try a few alternatives until you find one that's available.

Gmail Features

You can see the features that Gmail provides at: http://mail.google.com/mail/help/intl/en/about.html and http://mail.google.com/mail/help/intl/en/about_whatsnew.html.

While these features are subject to change, at the current time they include:

  • Large amount of free storage space (the limit is currently almost 7GB and is increasing all the time).
  • Good protection against spam.
  • Ability to chat within Gmail (an instant messaging function which allows users to exchange typed messages in real-time, without the delays associated with email).
  • The ability to access your email from your mobile phone.

Premium Version – Google Apps Premier Edition

A premium version is available as part of the Premier Edition of Google Apps, for a small annual fee (currently $50 per user per year). While the features are subject to change, this currently provides a guaranteed 99.9% uptime for email, larger storage capacity (currently 25GB), plus various other benefits. Details are available at: http://www.google.com/a/help/intl/en/admins/editions.html.

Gmail POP/IMAP Access

If you sign in to your Gmail account, hit the "Settings" button at the top of the screen, and then go to the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" tab, then you can enable either POP or IMAP to allow you to download your email to your local computer (Google recommend using IMAP, because it handles accessing email from multiple devices better). In both cases (POP and IMAP), there are detailed instructions on how to configure your particular email program to access your Gmail account.
