Common Email Tasks

The following sections explain how to perform common email tasks (sending, receiving email etc.). These sections are all based on Windows Live Mail. If you're using a different email client, then the specific steps will obviously be different, but the basic method should be pretty much the same. Hopefully this means that it should be fairly straightforward to work out how these tasks are accomplished with your specific email client.

Before getting into details, the section below describes the typical layout of an email client. Again, this is based on Windows Live Mail, but the others are very similar.

Email Client Layout

All commonly-used email clients have a similar layout. The picture below shows the Windows Live Mail client, and identifies its main parts.

Red = The Folder Pane, which shows the email accounts and folders which have been created.

Green = The Message List, which shows a summary of the messages in the currently-selected folder.

Blue = The Reading Pane (also commonly referred to as the Preview Pane), which displays the currently-selected message.

Yellow = Shortcuts to other related functions.

Cyan = The Search Box, which allows you to find messages containing specific search terms.

Purple = Menus and Buttons, which show the functions that can be performed.
